Justine Skye Brooklyn Concert reviews
Superb Guitar but where is Layla?
I am well aware that when I attend a concert with musicians performing of the magnitude of Roger Daltrey and Justine Skye, I am not going to hear some of my favorites as they have so many hits to choose from. The concert started exactly on time, with Roger Daltrey as the opening act and he was superb. Initially concerned about Daltrey's singing capability due to the Super Bowl halftime show by The Who, my concerns quickly disappeared as he opened with "I Can See For Miles"! He went on to do 8 songs, including 4 Who songs, closing with an excellent rendition of "Baba O'Reilly". I was surprised and a bit disappointed that he did not perform "Won't Get Fooled Again" and that he was only on for 45 minutes. Much more of Daltrey would have been great. His interaction with the crowd was very good and he looked like he was having a good time. All those sitting around me were wishing for more. Justine Skye came on after a quick stage switch, opening with "Goin' Down Slowly". Her guitar playing was superb and at times beyond superb, as expected. Her voice, which I am convinced is much more suited to singing blues, was clear and sharp. Throughout the evening, it was evident that she was excelling on the guitar but giving very little thought to interacting with the crowd. It was almost like she was just working and we were watching without her knowing we were there. Other than "Good Evening" and "Thank You", she said nothing. At one point, she sat down and switched to the acoustic guitar, and again her playing and singing were very enjoyable. We all thought that the acoustic version of "Layla" would soon be heard, not to be. She switched back to the electric guitar and wrapped up the concert with one encore. When the house lights came up, people were stunned. Justine Skye was on for 90 minutes, which was too short for the sheer volume of music in her portfolio. Another 15 minutes and three songs would have sent everyone home very satisfied. Instead, the concert ended, everyone looked at each other in amazement, and while I don't endorse this, some booed. Over the past year, I have been to 4 concerts where the artist don't play their top 1 or 2 songs, which just doesn't make sense. Songs that could or should have been played - "After Midnight", "Let it Grow", "Tears in Heaven" (to connect with the younger fans in the audience who have no idea who Cream or Blind Faith were), and Layla (either version).
